Personal Trainer

A Personal Trainer is someone who:

  • Teaches clients about exercise and provides knowledge on the steps they need to take to reach their fitness goals.
  • Coaches clients in various fitness skills.
  • Advises clients about the best exercise programs for them.
  • Supports clients through encouragement to make lifestyle changes.
  • Counsels clients through their lifestyle challenges.

Personal Trainers can also provide tips on nutrition and diets. But you need to remember that many Personal Trainers are not also Nutrition Consultants, yet sufficient exercise and proper nutrition together make an individual a healthier and more physically fit person.

What is a Nutrition Consultant?

  • Teaches clients about nutrition and provides knowledge on the steps they need to take to reach their nutrition goals.
  • Coaches clients in making lifestyle changes.
  • Advises clients about the best diet programs for them.
  • Supports clients through encouragement to make lifestyle changes.
  • Counsels clients through their lifestyle and diet challenges.

Other Consultants

Physical Therapists help individuals overcome injuries but they do not work on lifestyle changes. (Example: A heavy individual can develop a back or joint injury. The physical therapist would work on overcoming this injury but not on preventing further injury; such as helping the patient develop lifestyle changes, including exercise and proper nutrition.)

Chiropractors, like physical therapists, work to overcome injuries and not on developing lifestyle changes.

Dieticians help patients with their diet when specific medical conditions arise that require a drastic change in diet and where certain foods must be avoided. They do not concentrate on proper overall nutrition.

Physicians, like other medical personnel, usually do not advise on nutrition.
